Andy, I stumbled on your blog about copiers and printers while doing a search on Dell's printing business. I also read your blog on consultants and had a chuckle on the truth you speak.
The irony is we are consultants in the copier and printer business and have built a simple little site - www.docurx.com that speaks about all the costs associated with document output and 1) how little users know about the subject and 2) know few ways there are to correct it without buying new hardware or spending a bundle with a big 4 consulting firm.
We are still in the beta test phase of this program, and since you seem to know about the perils of working with output devices and their associated service providers, we would like to offer it to you (at no charge) to review, critic and advise us on you thoughts of whether a program like this would work in the real world. You're more than welcome to feel out the information section on the last page or email me back at info@docurx.com
The same holds true to anyone reading this and is in a situation where they have more than 20 copiers, printers and fax machines and are looking for a strategy to improve their situation while driving out costs.

Glad I could help - its a trick we used in our old company with an application we used - to guarantee printouts formatted in the way we wanted them (plain listings of data) we insisted the hplj4 driver was installed on the server, that way we knew the output would look the same on every printer we came across.
